How to teach Author’s Purpose
Using Author’s Purpose Sorting Activity, students identify the reasons an author gives to support points in a text.
Understanding the reason why an author wrote a text supports your students’ comprehension as they read. This activity gives them the opportunity to match the descriptions to each reason why an author writes.
Students read a book. Next, choose an Author’s Purpose Card that tells why the author wrote the text. Then, discuss reasons why the author wrote the text in that way.

Then, students complete the activity individually or with a partner. Finally, students share about the authors and illustrators they learned about. Once finished, students continue their practice using the provided worksheet.
