Description
End punctuation is the small signal at the close of a sentence that tells a reader exactly how the words are meant to sound, and the Rewriting End Punctuation Worksheet gives third graders focused practice with all three of those signals. A period closes a telling sentence, a question mark closes an asking sentence, and an exclamation mark closes a sentence said with strong feeling. Learning to hear the difference is only half of the skill. The other half is being able to take a sentence that is already written one way and rebuild it so that it ends a different way, which is exactly what this page asks students to do.
On this printable page, students read five sentences. Beside each sentence is a new end mark, and the job is to rewrite the whole sentence on the two writing lines below so that the new mark fits. Sometimes that means moving a helping word to the front to turn a statement into a question. Sometimes it means bringing the subject back to the front to turn a question into a statement. A worked example at the top of the page models the move before students try it on their own, and a complete answer key is included so checking the work takes a moment.

Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- It turns a rule into an action. Naming the three end marks is recognition. Rewriting a sentence so a different mark belongs is application, and application is what state assessments actually ask for.
- It builds sentence flexibility. Moving words around to change a statement into a question teaches students that sentence order carries meaning, which carries straight into their own writing.
- It reinforces capital letters at the same time. Every rewritten sentence begins with a new first word, so students practice starting a sentence correctly five more times.
Ideas For Teachers And Parents
Read each original sentence aloud before students write, then read it again with the new end mark so they can hear the change they are being asked to make. This 3rd grade punctuation worksheet works well as a warm up for a writing block, as a small group activity, or as a quick check before a grammar assessment. For students who need more support, let them say the new sentence out loud first and only then write it down. For students who finish early, ask them to write one more sentence of their own and hand it to a partner with a different end mark beside it.
