How to teach Punctuation

Using this Say What Quotation Station Activity, students will
demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English
capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
First, create sentences using the Word, Quotation, and Comma Cards. Then, match the sentences you create to the Character Cards. Finally, use the practice worksheet to write the sentences you created using correct punctuation.

Understanding how to appropriately use quotation marks has various benefits for your students. First, having this skill can positively impact a student’s reading fluency, also impacting their comprehension. Second, this skill will help students when writing personal narratives.

In order to enjoy this activity throughout the year, print pages 1-4 on cardstock. Then, cut and laminate the word, comma, and quotation cards, as well as the character cards. Next, have students pick a character card and use the word, comma, and quotation cards to correctly form the character’s dialogue. Finally, let students practice writing these sentences with correct punctuation on the practice worksheet.
