How to teach Capitalization and Punctuation
Using Proofreading Capitalization and Punctuation Activity, students make punctuation and capitalization corrections on the laminated activity cards. Then, they rewrite the corrected sentences on the worksheet.
Being able to use correct capitalization and punctuation in their writing will help them to better engage their readers and convey their message more clearly. This activity gives your students practice looking for and correcting punctuation and capitalization.
First, teachers should print the activity cards on cardstock and have them laminated. Then, students use dry-erase markers on the laminated activity cards to make corrections. Next, the students will use the worksheet to rewrite the sentences correctly.

Introduce this activity by first writing a variety of sentences on the board with misused capitalization and punctuation. Include interrogative, declarative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences, as well as dialogue. Then, ask your students to help you correct the capitalization and punctuation errors. Next, help your students come up with tips about how to figure out if a word should be capitalized, as well as when to use the various types of punctuation. Then, students complete the activity independently or with a partner. Finally, have students use the worksheet to rewrite the sentences using correct punctuation and capitalization
