About this resource

Description

Landforms are the natural shapes that make up the surface of the Earth, and learning their names is one of the first steps in physical geography. This Landform Matching Definitions Worksheet gives students a clear, hands-on way to connect six key landform words — plateau, delta, dune, glacier, peninsula, and canyon — with the definitions that describe them. When children can name what they see on a map or in a photograph, they can talk about places with real precision, and that vocabulary carries straight into science, reading, and social studies.

This 4th grade geography worksheet is built in three parts that move from recognition to application. In Part A, students draw a line from each landform word to the definition that matches it. In Part B, they study three painted landform scenes and write the correct name on the line under each picture. In Part C, they read a short scenario about a group of hikers, name the landform being described, and explain how the definition helped them decide. Use it as a vocabulary check after a landforms lesson, as a warm-up before a mapping activity, or as a quick review before a unit test.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • 6 landform-to-definition matches, 3 illustrated landforms to name, and 1 written-response question

There are three reasons this Landform Matching Definitions Worksheet helps children learn geography vocabulary. First, matching a word to its meaning builds the exact word-meaning connection that reading tests measure, and the scrambled layout means students have to read rather than guess. Second, the illustrated landforms give visual learners a picture to attach to each term, so “canyon” stops being a spelling item and becomes a place a child can imagine. Third, the written-response question asks students to justify an answer with evidence from a definition, which is the reasoning skill fourth graders need across every subject.

Teachers and parents can stretch this lesson well past the page. Hand out the landform words as cards and ask students to sort them into land, water, and ice groups. Pull up a satellite map and challenge children to find a real delta, peninsula, or plateau anywhere in the world. Ask each student to sculpt one landform from play dough and let the class guess which one it is. At the dinner table, take turns describing a landform in one sentence while everyone else names it. Older siblings can write a travel postcard from a canyon or a glacier, using at least three landform words correctly.
