Rebus reading is one of the first big wins a young reader gets. In a rebus story a picture stands in for a word, so a child can carry the meaning of a whole sentence before every word on the page is decodable. This Snake Rebus Worksheet puts that picture support to work on fluency: a short, friendly story about a class pet snake who slips out of his tank, with four familiar nouns — snake, frog, bird and leaf — replaced by clear pictures. Because the pictures carry the hardest words, first graders keep their momentum and read the whole story out loud with confidence.
This rebus reading worksheet is built for a five to ten minute reading block. In Part A students read the story aloud, saying each picture word as they come to it, which is a natural way to practice one-to-one matching, phrasing and expression. In Part B they write the word that each of the four pictures stands for, moving from recognizing a picture to producing the printed word. Every answer is somewhere in the story, so the page is self-supporting and works just as well independently, in a small group, or as a partner read.

Three things make this Snake Rebus Worksheet work in a first grade classroom. First, the pictures lower the decoding load, so a child practices smooth, connected reading instead of stopping to sound out every noun. Second, the same four pictures come back in Part B, which turns a passive reading task into an active vocabulary check and moves the child from recognition to recall. Third, the story is written on grade level and repeats high-frequency words such as looked, the and we, so every re-reading builds the automaticity that real reading fluency is made of.
Teachers and parents can stretch this page in a lot of directions. Read it chorally the first time through, then have students re-read it to a partner and time themselves to watch their fluency grow. Cover the pictures with sticky notes and ask students to read the story again using only the printed words. Let children draw their own rebus sentence about a pet, swapping a picture in for one noun. The four picture words also make a quick beginning-sound sort or a handwriting warm-up.
