About this resource

Description

Putting events in order is one of the first big reading skills children learn, and it is just as important in science. This sequencing graphic organizer worksheet helps students retell the four main steps of a story or a life cycle in the order they happen. Because the four boxes are arranged in a circle, children can also see how a cycle ends right where it began.

About This Worksheet

This 2nd grade graphic organizers worksheet, titled Cycle of Events, has a line at the top for the title of the story or the name of the life cycle. Below it are four event boxes numbered 1 to 4, with arrows that lead the reader clockwise around the page and back to the start. Each box has a space to draw a picture of the step and three writing lines to tell about it in a sentence or two. Students can use it while they read a picture book, after a science lesson on butterflies, frogs, chickens or plants, or to plan a short piece of sequence writing. Every answer comes from the child’s own reading, so the page works with any text.

What’s Included

  • One printable page with a title line and four numbered event boxes
  • A drawing space and three writing lines in every box
  • Arrows that show the order of the cycle from step 1 back to step 1

Why This Worksheet Helps Kids

  • It teaches children to find the most important events and put them in the correct order.
  • Drawing first and writing second helps young writers plan their words before they write them.
  • The circle shape shows how a life cycle repeats, linking reading skills to real science topics.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents

Model the sequencing graphic organizer worksheet first with a familiar story or the butterfly life cycle, thinking aloud as you choose each step. Then let students fill it in on their own or with a partner. Encourage signal words such as first, next, then and last when children write on the lines. For a quick check, have students cut the four boxes apart, mix them up, and trade with a friend to put them back in order. The page also makes a simple retelling assessment in a reading group or a science notebook.
