This First Next Last Graphic Organizer Worksheet gives fourth grade readers one clean page for mapping the order of events in any book they read. Students record the book title and the author, write what happened first, number the events that came next in the order they happened, and finish by telling what happened last. Because the page works with any text, one print run covers a whole year of read-alouds, chapter books, novel studies and independent reading.
Sequencing is the skill behind retelling, summarizing and comprehension, and fourth graders need room to write more than a phrase. This organizer gives two full lines for the opening, four numbered lines for the middle events and two more lines for the ending, so students can explain each event instead of listing single words. Use it as a during-reading tool, a book-club record, a prewriting step before a summary paragraph, or a quick check that a student followed the plot. This first next last graphic organizer worksheet prints cleanly in black and white on standard letter paper.
