Description
A shadow appears whenever an object blocks the light travelling toward it, and the shape that lands on the ground keeps changing all day long. This shadows movement worksheet gives third graders a clear way to see why. The height of the light source is what does the work: a low light, like the sun near sunrise or sunset, throws a long shadow, while a high light, like the sun overhead at noon, leaves only a short one. Once students can predict that, they can explain why their own shadow is tall in the morning and tiny at lunchtime.
This 3rd grade energy worksheet has two parts. First students take a box of eight short phrases about light sources and write each one under Longer Shadow or Shorter Shadow, which forces them to judge how high each light is sitting. Then they read four sentences and pull out two words from each, the word that tells what the light did and the word that tells what the shadow did. Use it after a flashlight investigation, as independent practice in a light and energy unit, or as a quick check before a test. The answer key is on page two.

Three things make this shadows movement worksheet worth the page. First, sorting the phrases asks students to reason about cause and effect rather than recall a definition, because every entry names a light position and the child has to predict the result. Second, the sentence items build the language of change, matching a verb for the light with a verb for the shadow so students can describe what happened in their own words. Third, the picture at the bottom models both cases at once, giving a struggling reader something concrete to check an answer against.
Teachers and parents can take this outside in five minutes. Trace a partner’s shadow on the playground in the morning, then trace it again after lunch and measure both with a tape. Indoors, stand a toy on a sheet of paper and walk a flashlight from the tabletop up to shoulder height, marking the shadow each time. Ask students to draw the sun where it must have been to make a shadow you show them. Adding a shadow date and time to a class chart all year turns the idea into a long running investigation.
