Description

Hearing the difference between the short /o/ in rock and the long /o/ in rope is one of the first real decoding wins of first grade, and this Short and Long Vowel O Worksheet gives students a focused way to practice it. Once a reader learns that a silent e on the end of a word stretches the vowel, whole families of words open up at once: not becomes note, rod becomes rode, and hop becomes hope. Until that pattern clicks, a student has to guess at every new word with an o in it. After it clicks, the same student can sound the word out and keep reading.

This Short and Long Vowel O Worksheet works in two short parts, so students practice the skill in isolation first and then use it inside real sentences. In Part A, six single words are printed in their own cards and students say each one aloud, then fill in the bubble for a short o or a long o. In Part B, four sentences each hide one long /o/ word among short /o/ words, and students circle the long one. Two clay-style pictures at the bottom label a pond and a rope, giving the class one example of each sound to point at. Print it, hand it out, and use the included answer key to check the work in about a minute.

Three Reasons This Helps Kids

First, it separates listening from reading. Part A asks only for the sound, so a student who is still slow at decoding can still succeed, and the teacher can see whether the ear or the eye is the problem. Second, it moves the skill into context. A word sorted correctly on its own is not the same as a word read correctly inside a sentence, and Part B closes that gap. Third, it builds the silent-e habit that carries straight into a-e, i-e, u-e, and e-e words later in the year, so the time spent here pays off across every long vowel that follows.

Teacher and Parent Ideas

Read the six Part A words aloud as a class before anyone marks a bubble, and have students hold up one finger for short and two for long so you can scan the room in a second. Turn the sheet over and challenge students to change each short o word into a new word by adding a silent e, then read both aloud. At home, go on an o hunt: walk through the house naming things with a short o and things with a long o, and write the best finds on the back. This first grade vowels worksheet also pairs well with a magnetic-letter tray, where a child physically slides an e onto the end of not and watches it become note.
