About this resource
Description
This Sleepover Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives 3rd Grade readers a short, warm fiction story about a boy named Ayden spending his first night at a friend’s house. A sleepover is an event almost every child looks forward to and very few have read about on the page, so the story gives readers a familiar situation with unfamiliar words attached to it — guest, fort, grin, plan — and asks them to read closely enough to find an answer and point to the sentence it came from. The passage follows Ayden from the moment he packs his bag through the blanket fort, the popcorn, the board game and the stories in the dark, all the way to pancakes the next morning. Because the questions on this sleepover reading comprehension worksheet are keyed to specific sentences, students cannot answer them from their own memories of a sleepover; they have to go back into the text.
The sheet runs to three pages. Page one holds the illustrated story on its own, so students can read it without questions crowding the page. Page two carries the Name and Date line, four fill-in-the-bubble questions, and one written response that asks students to gather two details from across the whole passage. Page three is the complete answer key, with the written response answered in full sentences a teacher can compare against. Used as a guided reading passage, a literacy-center task, or a quick independent check, this 3rd grade reading comprehension worksheet takes most students about fifteen to twenty minutes.
What’s Included
- 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
- A 222-word original fiction passage written on a 3rd Grade reading level
- An original illustrated scene of the two friends and the blanket fort they built
- 4 multiple-choice questions with three answer choices each
- 1 written-response question with three writing lines
- A complete answer key on its own page
Why This Helps Kids Learn
- Every answer is in the text. Each question is written against a specific sentence in the story, so students practice locating evidence instead of answering from what they already know about sleepovers.
- The written response reaches across the whole story. Students must pull two details from different paragraphs to explain how they know Ayden was a good guest, which is the inference work third graders are assessed on.
- Character is taught without a lecture. Ayden rolls up his sleeping bag, folds the blankets and thanks the family, so students draw a conclusion about kindness and responsibility from what a character does rather than from a rule they are told.
Ways to Use It
Read the story aloud once as a class, then have students reread it silently before they touch the questions. In a small group, ask each student to underline the sentence that answers each question before filling in a bubble — that one habit turns a quick worksheet into real evidence practice. For homework, send page one home the night before and save the questions for the next morning so families can enjoy the story together. Early finishers can turn the written response into a short paragraph on the back, or retell the night from Mila’s side instead of Ayden’s.
