The Old Castle Reading Comprehension Worksheet takes students on a trip through real history. Its nonfiction passage tells the story of Hwaseong Fortress, a stone wall more than two hundred years old that still winds through the busy city of Suwon, South Korea. Reading comprehension at the fifth-grade level asks students to follow a longer informational text, learn new words from context, and return to the page for evidence. The Old Castle Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives them all of that practice in one lesson.
The passage runs about 760 words across two pages. It explains what a fortress is, why a Korean king ordered one built in 1794, how a wooden crane with ropes and pulleys helped workers finish in about two and a half years, and why the builders mixed stone with brick. Students learn that the workers were paid wages, that clerks kept careful records, and that a book printed in 1801 later guided the restoration of the walls. Every question can be answered from the text, so the sheet also works well as a 5th grade history worksheet.
