About this resource
Description
The mp blend is one of the first ending blends young readers meet, and it turns up everywhere in the words children already use — camp, lamp, jump, stamp, damp and bump. Blending two consonants at the end of a word is harder than it looks, because a reader has to hold the vowel sound and then land both final sounds cleanly instead of dropping one. The Champ at the Camp MP Phonics Stories Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives first graders a short, friendly story that is packed with mp words, so they practise the blend the way real readers meet it — inside sentences that make sense — rather than on an isolated list. Reading the blend in context is what moves it from something a child can sound out to something a child simply knows.
This 1st grade blends worksheet opens with an original story called Champ at the Camp. Rowan takes her dog Champ to summer camp, hangs a little lamp on a wooden hook, and loses her map until Champ sniffs it out under a bump in the path. Ten different mp words are woven through the passage. On the second page, students answer five fill-in-the-bubble comprehension questions drawn from across the whole story, so they have to go back to the text to find the evidence. Read the story aloud together first, then let students reread it on their own before they answer. Ask them to circle every mp word they can find in the passage as a quick warm-up, and use the included answer key to check their work in seconds.
What’s Included
- 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
- Answer key
- 1 original mp blend phonics story and 5 multiple-choice comprehension questions
Three things make the Champ at the Camp MP Phonics Stories Reading Comprehension Worksheet work well in a first-grade classroom. First, the story puts the target blend in meaningful context, so children build decoding and comprehension at the same time instead of drilling one skill in isolation. Second, the passage is written at a measured first-grade reading level, with short sentences and familiar vocabulary, so students can read it independently and feel successful. Third, the multiple-choice questions ask about details from the beginning, middle and end of the story, which builds the habit of rereading to find text evidence — exactly the habit that reading assessments look for later on.
Keep the mp blend going after the worksheet is finished. Start an mp word wall and add a new word every time someone spots one in a book. Play a quick sorting game with cards for mp, nd and nk endings, and have students say each word aloud before they place it. Ask children to write their own two-sentence camping story using at least three mp words, then illustrate it. At home, go on an mp hunt around the house — lamp, ramp, stamp, jump rope — and clap the ending sound each time. Small, playful repetitions like these are what make an ending blend automatic.
