Subtracting large numbers accurately is one of the biggest place-value milestones of fifth grade, and this subtracting to thousands and thousandths worksheet puts both ends of the place-value chart on a single page. Students subtract whole numbers that reach the thousands place, then slide across the decimal point and subtract decimals all the way out to the thousandths place. The skill looks like two separate topics, but it is really one idea: digits only combine when they share a place value, so the ones line up with the ones, the tenths line up with the tenths, and every regrouping move works exactly the same in both directions.
