About this resource
Description
A suffix is a word part added to the end of a base word, and it changes the meaning of that word. This suffixes list worksheet gives fourth graders practice with nine common suffixes: -er, -ible, -ion, -ist, -less, -ly, -ness, -or, and -y. By taking words apart, students learn how suffixes build new vocabulary.
About This Worksheet
In the first part, students read ten words, such as painter, flexible, and collection. They remove the suffix from each word and write the base word on the line. In the second part, students read three meanings and choose the matching word from the list. This 4th grade suffixes worksheet fits well in literacy centers, vocabulary lessons, homework, or a quick review before a test.
What’s Included
- One printable worksheet with ten base-word items and three meaning items
- Practice with nine common suffixes taken from real words
- An answer key for quick, easy checking
Why It Helps Kids
First, finding the base word helps students decode long, unfamiliar words on their own. Second, matching words to meanings shows how a suffix such as -less or -ist changes what a word means. Third, the page builds strong word knowledge that supports reading, spelling, and writing in every subject.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
After students finish the suffixes list worksheet, ask them to add a new word for each suffix to a class word wall. Challenge partners to find words with suffixes in a chapter book and sort them by suffix. You can also have children write one sentence using each word from Part B, then trade papers and underline every suffix a partner used. Keep a running list of new suffix words the class discovers during independent reading. Explore the resources below for even more suffix practice.
