About this resource
Description
A suffix is a word part added to the end of a base word, and it often changes what the word means. This Suffixes Word List Worksheet helps fifth graders connect common Greek and Latin suffixes such as -ics, -pathy, -ward, and -script to their meanings, then use suffixes like -age, -ive, -tion, and -ure to build new words. Knowing what a suffix means gives students a powerful tool for figuring out unfamiliar words in science, social studies, and chapter books.
This 5th grade suffixes worksheet has two parts. In the first part, students use a word box to complete a chart, writing the meaning of each suffix and an example word that ends with it. In the second part, they read four sentences, add the correct suffix to the base word in parentheses, and write the new word so that it completes the sentence. Use the page for vocabulary lessons, literacy centers, homework, or a quick review before a test.
What’s Included
- 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
- Answer key
- A suffix meaning chart and 4 word-building sentences
This worksheet helps students in three ways. First, linking each suffix to its meaning builds the word-part knowledge that state vocabulary tests expect. Second, adding suffixes to base words in real sentences shows how a suffix can change a word’s part of speech and meaning. Third, the mix of chart work and sentence work keeps students thinking about both spelling and meaning at the same time.
Teachers and parents can extend the lesson with simple activities. Have students hunt through a science or social studies book for words with the suffixes from the chart and add them to a class word wall. Challenge partners to build as many words as they can with -tion or -ive in two minutes. Ask students to write a short paragraph that uses three new words from this Suffixes Word List Worksheet.
