Description
A compound word is two smaller words joined together, and every compound word also has a beat that children can clap. This syllables compound words worksheet helps second graders put those two ideas together. Students say each compound word out loud, clap the syllables, and decide whether the word has two syllables or three. Then they break new compound words apart into the two smaller words that build them, which is a strong decoding habit for longer words.
This syllables compound words worksheet starts with a word box of six compound words such as sailboat, rainbow and butterfly. Children clap each word and write it in the Two Syllables or Three Syllables column, with a friendly picture under each column to model the sort. In the second section, students read four new compound words like snowman and sunset and write the two smaller words on the line.
