Description
Place value is the idea that a digit’s position tells you how much it is worth, and it is the foundation for every bit of arithmetic that follows. A second grader who can look at 638 and say “six hundreds, three tens, and eight ones” is ready to add, subtract, compare, and round with confidence. This finding the place value worksheet gives students focused practice moving in both directions: building a three-digit number from its hundreds, tens, and ones, and pulling a number apart into the places that make it. Working both ways is what turns place value from a memorized rule into real number sense.
The page is organized into three short parts so students can build up gradually. In Part A they add the hundreds, tens, and ones and write the standard number on the line, and two of the items deliberately list the places out of order so students have to read carefully instead of copying digits left to right. In Part B they work backward, writing how many hundreds, tens, and ones are in each number, including numbers with a zero in the middle. Part C finishes with two word problems that put the skill in a real setting. Use this 2nd grade place value worksheet as morning work, as a quick check after a lesson on expanded form, as homework, or as a small-group review.

This resource helps students in three ways. First, practicing in both directions builds flexible thinking, because a child who can only go one way is following a procedure rather than understanding the places. Second, the scrambled items and the numbers containing a zero force students to slow down and check each place, which is exactly where careless place value errors come from. Third, the word problems in Part C connect the skill to counting real collections, so students see why a finding the place value worksheet matters outside of a math book.
Teachers and parents can extend the practice easily. Give students base ten blocks or bundles of straws and have them build the numbers from Part A before writing them. Play a quick “guess my number” game where you call out places in a mixed order and students race to write the number. Have students choose a three-digit number from a book page or a receipt and say its places out loud. Ask them to write their own word problem like the ones in Part C and trade it with a partner. Finally, sing a counting song together to reinforce grouping by tens and hundreds.
