About this resource
Description
Before a child can borrow across a place value chart, they have to be sure of the easy case: subtract the ones, subtract the tens, subtract the hundreds, and write what is left. This Triple Digit Subtracting No Regroup Worksheet gives 2nd grade students six column problems where every top digit is already big enough, so the only thing being practiced is the column habit itself. Nothing is hidden and nothing is tricky; the child looks at one column at a time and finds the difference.
This 2nd grade subtraction worksheet is a two-page set. Page one holds six problems in labeled place value charts, marked H, T and O so the hundreds, tens and ones stay in their own columns, plus two word problems with a writing line for the answer. Page two is the answer key. Work the first problem together and say the column names out loud, then let students finish the rest on their own. Because no problem regroups, a wrong answer almost always means a digit slipped out of its column, which makes the sheet easy to correct with the child rather than just marking it.
What’s Included
- 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
- Answer key
- 6 three-digit column subtraction problems, none of them regrouping
- 2 word problems with an answer line and labeled units
There are three reasons this Triple Digit Subtracting No Regroup Worksheet helps young mathematicians grow. First, the labeled H, T and O chart makes place value visible, so hundreds stay under hundreds and ones under ones instead of drifting. Second, taking regrouping off the table lets a student build speed and confidence with three-digit numbers before the harder case arrives. Third, the two word problems ask the child to decide that subtraction is the right move, which is the part a page of bare problems never practices.
Teachers and parents can stretch this sheet a long way. Ask students to check each answer by adding it back to the number they subtracted. Have them build one problem with base ten blocks and take the blocks away column by column. Turn the two word problems into a class story and write a new one about your own classroom. Once the sheet feels easy, move on to a regrouping page so the contrast between the two is clear.
