Alphabetical order stops being about the alphabet song the moment two words start with the same letter. Candy or card? Flowers or friends? Using this Valentine’s Day Alphabetical Order Worksheet, third graders sort ten Valentine words into ABC order and have to look past the first letter to do it. That second and third letter comparison is the skill behind every dictionary, glossary, index and contact list a student will ever use, and a holiday word list is a friendly place to practice it.
The Valentine’s Day Alphabetical Order Worksheet is a two page printable. Page one holds a word box of ten Valentine words printed out of order, ten numbered lines to rewrite them on, and a four card second section where students circle the word in each pair that comes first and then write which letter decided it. One pair separates at the second letter, one at the third, and one not until the fifth. Page two is the complete answer key. Print it, read the word box aloud together, and let students underline the letter they are comparing before they write.
