This Welcome to Hawaii Reading Comprehension Worksheet builds the exact reading comprehension skills third graders are asked to show on an assessment: reading an informational text closely, finding the answer that is stated right there in the words, and pulling two details together to explain an idea in writing. Informational reading is its own skill. A story carries a reader along with characters and events, while a text about a real place asks the reader to hold on to facts, dates and place names, and to notice how each paragraph does a different job.
The sheet opens with an original 232-word passage about the state of Hawaii, written and measured at a third grade reading level, paired with a painted island scene. Students read the passage on page one, then turn to page two for four multiple-choice questions and one written response.
