Using this Why oh Why Story Details Activity, students answer the questions “What happened?” and “why did it happen?” while citing their textual evidence.
Being able to interact with the text that they are reading will help your students to gain a better understanding of what they have read. This activity will help your students as they read independently.
Students will start by reading “A New Car” before using the “Why, Oh Why?” graphic organizer to pull information from the text to tell three events that happened and why they happened.

Next, ask students to share why they think that event happened, and to provide evidence that supports their answer. Discuss how events in stories often have a cause, or a “why”, and that it is important to be able to draw that evidence from the text. Then, students complete the activity independently or with a partner. Once finished, students use the graphic organizer to write a cohesive paper. Challenge students by using the “Why, Oh Why?” graphic organizer with other texts you are using in class.
