This What is it Made of reading comprehension worksheet pairs a short science text with the questions that prove a student understood it. The passage answers the title question directly: everything around us is made of matter, and matter shows up in three familiar forms. Students read the text once, then work back through it to find the evidence for every answer, which is the habit reading tests are built to measure.
The passage runs about 245 words at a third grade reading level, with an illustrated kitchen scene above it showing one example of each form. The first paragraph defines matter as the stuff that takes up space and has weight, including air a child cannot see. The second paragraph walks through solids, liquids and gases with everyday objects: a wooden block, a glass of milk, the air inside a balloon. The third explains how heat and cold move matter from one form to another, from a melting ice cube to steam leaving a mug. Page two holds four fill-in-the-bubble questions and one written response. Page three is the answer key.
