From our teachers' playbook

Letters, sounds, and lots of singing

What do preschoolers learn in phonics?

Preschool phonics is all about getting to know the letters. Kids learn to recognize uppercase and lowercase letters, sing the alphabet, and start matching letters to their sounds, like B says /b/ like ball. They notice the first sound in their own name and in favorite words, play with rhymes, and clap syllables. This is not about reading yet. It is about building a strong, happy foundation so letters and sounds feel familiar when kindergarten begins.

How we teach preschool phonics

Preschoolers learn with their whole bodies. These moves use songs, games and play.

A song for every letter

Introduce each letter with its own song and a simple motion, like crunching an apple for A. Sing it all week and revisit old songs often. Preschoolers will be singing letter sounds at home without being asked.

Why it works: words set to a repeating melody are easier to recall than the same words spoken (Wallace, 1994).

Letter games

Play a quick letter game right after the song, finding the letter and saying its sound. Short, playful practice keeps little ones engaged and builds recognition fast.

Why it works: playful practice with a clear goal keeps kids practicing longer, and simple learning games have been shown to build real skills (Ramani and Siegler, 2008).

Match the letters

Give kids uppercase and lowercase letter cards to match on the table. Start with letters in their names, then add more. Matching builds visual recognition before writing.

Why it works: the U.S. Department of Education's guide for teaching elementary math recommends moving from hands-on objects to drawings to numbers.

Preschool phonics questions

Should preschoolers learn phonics?

Yes, in a playful way. Preschoolers benefit from learning letter names and sounds through songs, games and books.

What should a preschooler know about letters?

By the end of preschool, many children recognize most uppercase letters, some lowercase letters, and several letter sounds, especially the letters in their own name.

Which letters should I teach first?

Start with the letters in your child's name and common letters like s, m, a and t. There is no single right order.

How can I teach letter sounds at home?

Sing alphabet songs, point out letters on signs and labels, and play "I spy something that starts with /m/."
