Partner up the cubes
Give kids a handful of cubes and have them line them up in pairs, two by two. If every cube has a buddy, the number is even. If one is left alone, it is odd. After building a few, ask them to predict before they pair.
Why it works: the U.S. Department of Education's guide for teaching elementary math recommends moving from hands-on objects to drawings to numbers.
