From our teachers' playbook

Flip, think, say it, win it

What can kids practice with flash cards?

Flash cards are one of the simplest ways to practice anything kids need to know by heart: letters and sounds, numbers and quantities, sight words, shapes, money, vocabulary, prefixes and suffixes, even states and capitals. The secret is in the flip. When a child tries to remember the answer before turning the card, they're doing retrieval practice, and that strengthens memory much more than rereading. Picture cards work beautifully for pre-readers and English language learners, and word wall cards do double duty on your classroom wall. The click is when the "not yet" pile shrinks to nothing.

Our favorite ways to use flash cards

A stack of cards can do a lot more than drill. These moves get the most out of every flip.

Two piles

Kids say the answer before they flip. If they got it, it goes in the "got it" pile; if not, the "not yet" pile. Next time, start with the not yet pile. Kids can see their progress, and practice goes exactly where it's needed.

Why it works: pulling an answer out of memory makes it stick far better than rereading it, one of the strongest findings in learning research (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Short and often

Five minutes with flash cards three or four times a week beats a long session on Friday. Mix in a few old cards with the new ones each time so earlier learning doesn't fade.

Why it works: spreading practice out over days is one of the two most effective study methods in a major research review (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

See it, say it

Use cards with a picture on one side and a word on the other. Young kids start with the picture side and say the word; as they grow, flip to the word side first. It builds vocabulary and reading at the same time.

Why it works: pairing a picture with each word gives kids two ways to remember it, a well-tested principle of how people learn (Mayer, 2009).

Flash cards: your questions

Do flash cards actually work?

Yes, when kids try to recall the answer before flipping. That effort to remember is called retrieval practice, and it builds stronger memory than looking at the answer or rereading.

At what age can kids use flash cards?

Toddlers and preschoolers can enjoy picture cards for colors, shapes and animals. Letter, number and sight word cards fit preschool through 1st grade, and older kids use them for vocabulary, facts and test review.

How many flash cards should we practice at once?

Start with a small set, about 5 to 10 cards for young kids. Add new cards as the old ones move into the "got it" pile, and keep reviewing a few old ones.

How do I make flash cards more fun?

Turn them into games like memory match, beat the timer or around the world. Let kids be the teacher and quiz you, too.
