From our teachers' playbook

Tiny endings, big word power

What do kids learn about suffixes?

A suffix is a little word part stuck on the end of a base word, and it changes the meaning or the job of that word. Kids start in 1st grade with -s, -ed and -ing, then move to -er, -est, -ful, -less and -ly in 2nd grade. By 3rd through 5th grade they're tackling -ness, -ment, -able, -ible and -tion. The magic moment is when a child splits a long word apart on their own: care + less + ness = carelessness. Suddenly big words aren't scary anymore. They're just puzzles!

Our favorite ways to make suffixes stick

Suffixes click when kids take words apart and put them back together. These are the moves we lean on every year.

Word math with base words

Write a base word on one card and a suffix on another, then have kids slide them together and read the new word. Hope + ful = hopeful! Ask what changed: the meaning, the spelling, or both. Then switch suffixes (hopeless!) and talk about how one tiny ending flips the whole meaning.

Why it works: kids understand an idea best when they touch it, then draw it, then write it, the order the U.S. Department of Education recommends for elementary math.

Think aloud the spelling rules

Kids happily write hopping as hoping. Model three rules out loud: double the last consonant (hop, hopping), drop the silent e (make, making) and change y to i (happy, happier). Sort a pile of words into those three rule groups before kids try the practice page on their own.

Why it works: handing over the work step by step, from teacher to student, is one of the most widely used teaching frameworks (Pearson and Gallagher, 1983).

Quick-flash the meanings

Flash a suffix card and kids call out what it means: -less means without, -ful means full of, -er can mean one who. Keep it under three minutes. Then flip it around: say a meaning and kids hold up the matching suffix.

Why it works: a big review of study methods ranked quick self-quizzing among the most powerful ways to remember (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Suffix questions we hear a lot

What is a suffix?

A suffix is a letter or group of letters added to the end of a base word to change its meaning or part of speech. In teacher, the -er turns the verb teach into a person. In joyful, -ful means full of joy.

What's the difference between a prefix and a suffix?

A prefix goes at the beginning of a word and a suffix goes at the end. In unhelpful, un- is the prefix and -ful is the suffix. Both are affixes, and both change meaning.

What grade do kids learn suffixes?

Kids meet -s, -ed and -ing in 1st grade and keep adding endings every year. By 4th and 5th grade they use suffixes like -able, -ible and -tion, along with Greek and Latin roots, to figure out new vocabulary.

Why does -ed sound different in different words?

The -ed ending makes three sounds: /t/ in jumped, /d/ in played and /id/ in wanted. Have kids sort words into three columns by the sound they hear. It makes reading and spelling past-tense verbs much easier.

Are these suffix worksheets printable?
