How to teach Place Value
In this 2.NBT.1 Second Grade Common Core Lesson, students understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones.
Place Value is the foundation for all of your future lessons. This lesson is perfect for small group, math centers, independent practice or whole group lesson.
Students shuffle and deal each player 6 number cards. Students each make the highest 3 digit number using their number cards. After each round, students draw 3 more cards. Record your winning number on your score card and the first one to five wins!

You may introduce this lesson by reviewing base ten blocks (hundreds, tens, and ones). Next, pull three cards from the pile to build a three-digit number. Ask students what numbers you could make and which number has the greatest value. Then, distribute the cards, mat and record sheet to partners.As students build their numbers, circulate around the classroom to listen to discussions students have about place value. After the games are over, share students discussions that you heard to promote place value knowledge.
