Third graders are asked to do more than remember what happened in a story. They have to work out why it happened, what a character is feeling, and what the whole story adds up to. This Bacon and Wool reading comprehension worksheet gives them an original farmyard story built for exactly that kind of thinking. Bacon the pig and Wool the sheep live at the quiet end of the barnyard until a young goat named Baaaad Boy moves in next door and starts kicking the fence at sunrise.
This 3rd grade reading comprehension worksheet is a three-page set. Page one holds the 224-word story and a full-colour illustration of the moment Baaaad Boy lands on the shed roof. Page two holds six questions that reach across the whole story: four fill-in-the-bubble questions on cause, sequence, character feeling and main idea, one vocabulary-in-context item, and one written response that asks the student to point to evidence. Page three is the complete answer key. Read the story together, then send students back into the text to hunt for the line that proves each answer.

Three things make this Bacon and Wool reading comprehension worksheet useful in a classroom. First, the story has a real problem and a real turn, so the questions can ask about cause and change rather than simple recall. Second, the answer choices are built from the story itself: the wrong answers are things that truly happen, only at the wrong moment, so a student who skims will pick one. Third, the written item asks for evidence rather than an opinion, which is the habit every state reading test rewards.
Teachers and parents can carry the lesson further in a few ways. Ask students to underline the sentence that tells why the goat was so noisy, then share the line they chose. Have partners retell the story in three sentences to practise summarising. Invite students to write a short letter from Baaaad Boy explaining what he really wanted, which turns inference into writing. At home, read the story aloud twice, once for the events and once for the feelings, and talk about a time a new neighbour or classmate needed a friend.
