About this resource
Description
Every child makes mistakes, and learning to tell a small one from a big one helps young students stay calm and fix what went wrong. This big and small mistakes sort activity gives preschool, kindergarten and first grade students a simple rule to use: a small mistake is easy to fix, and a big mistake is hard to fix, costs a lot, or could hurt someone. Talking about mistakes this way builds social skills, self-control and a growth mindset.
In the big and small mistakes sort activity, children read or listen to twelve picture cards, such as a toppled tower of blocks or a broken window, and decide how big each mistake is. They place each card on the green Small Mistake side or the orange Big Mistake side of the sorting mat, then tell how the mistake could be fixed. A kindergarten practice worksheet lets each child circle small or big for five new mistakes, and the answer keys make checking quick.
What’s Included
- A colorful cover page
- A How to Use page with simple steps, prep tips and an extension idea
- 12 picture cards on two sheets with easy straight cut lines
- A two-sided sorting mat for Small Mistake and Big Mistake
- A kindergarten practice worksheet with five new picture items
- Answer keys for the card sort and the practice worksheet
Why Kids Love It
First, the pictures make each mistake easy to understand, even for children who are not reading yet. Second, moving cards onto the mat turns a talk about feelings into a hands-on game that children can play with a partner. Third, the easy-to-fix question gives students a calm plan they can use the next time they spill, drop or break something at school or at home.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Use this preschool life skills activity during morning meeting, in a social skills small group, or at a calm-down corner. Start by sharing a small mistake you made and how you fixed it. After the sort, have children act out a calm way to fix one big mistake, such as taking a deep breath, telling a grown-up and saying sorry. Print the cards on cardstock and keep them in a zip-top bag for many rounds.
