About this resource

Description

Chemical properties describe how a material behaves when it meets heat, air, or another substance, and they can only be observed when a brand new substance is formed. This chemical properties matter worksheet gives fifth grade scientists a clear, structured way to tell a chemical change apart from a physical change. Students look at everyday events such as burning wood, rusting iron, melting ice, and breaking glass, and decide whether the material has truly become something new or has simply changed its size, shape, or state.

This 5th grade matter worksheet opens with a word bank of eight familiar events. Students read each one, decide whether it creates a new substance, and write it on a line in the Chemical Change or the Physical Change column. A second section asks them to explain their thinking in complete sentences using evidence from the event, so the page moves past sorting and into real scientific reasoning. Use it as a lesson warm-up, an exit ticket, an independent center activity, or a quick review before a unit test on matter.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • An 8-event sort into labeled Chemical Change and Physical Change columns
  • 2 written-response questions that ask students to justify their answers with evidence

Three things make this resource effective. First, sorting real, familiar events builds the mental checklist students need on a test: did a new substance form, or not? Second, the written-response section turns a quick sort into an explanation task, which is exactly what fifth grade science standards ask students to do with evidence. Third, this chemical properties matter worksheet keeps the vocabulary tight and on grade level, so students spend their energy on the science instead of on decoding the directions. The included answer key makes grading fast and lets students check their own reasoning.

Teachers and parents can extend the lesson in simple ways. Leave a shiny nail in a cup of water for a week and watch rust appear, then compare it with a nail that stayed dry. Mix baking soda and vinegar in a bowl and ask students to name every piece of evidence they can see, hear, and feel. Fold, tear, and crumple a sheet of paper, then ask whether the paper is still paper. Keep a class chart on the wall and add a new example every time someone spots one at home, in the kitchen, or in the cafeteria.
