Learning to tell a physical change from a chemical change is one of the biggest ideas in fifth-grade science, and this physical changes examples worksheet gives students the practice they need to do it with confidence. When matter goes through a physical change it takes on a new size, shape, or state — ice melts, paper tears, a carrot is sliced — but the substance itself never changes. A chemical change is different: the starting substance is gone and a brand-new substance forms in its place, the way an iron nail turns to rust or a log turns to ash.
