The Circle Adverbs Worksheet asks second graders one question eighteen times: is this word an adverb or not? A chart of eighteen words holds nine adverbs and nine words that are nouns, verbs or adjectives, and the child circles only the adverbs. A short writing block follows, where two of the circled adverbs have to be used in sentences of the child’s own.
Sorting a word list is a better test of the part of speech than filling a blank, because a blank often gives the answer away through the sentence around it. On this Circle Adverbs Worksheet there is no sentence to lean on, so the child has to know what an adverb does. The nine distractors are spread across nouns, verbs and adjectives, which means a wrong circle points at exactly which confusion needs teaching. The writing block then turns recognition into use, which is where the standard actually lands. This 2nd grade adverbs worksheet works as a grammar lesson, a quick check, or morning work.
