Description
The Circling Long Vowel Sounds A Worksheet asks first graders to hear the long a sound before they look for it in print. Part A shows six pictures with no words attached, so a child has to say each one out loud and listen to the middle sound rather than scan for a letter. Cake, rake and train carry the sound; sock, sun and bed do not, and the only way to tell is to say them.
Part B moves the same ear work onto the page. Four pairs of words sit side by side and the child circles the one with the long a sound. Every pair on this Circling Long Vowel Sounds A Worksheet is length matched on purpose: tail and tall, mill and mail, goat and gate, sail and silk. The long a word is never the longer word, so counting letters gets a child nowhere and reading is the only route through. Both the a-e spelling and the ai spelling appear, which is what a first grader meets in real books. The answer key is on the second page.

Three Reasons This Helps Kids
