Long a is one of the first vowel sounds young readers meet that can be spelled more than one way, and the two spellings that cause the most trouble are the vowel teams ai and ay. This Which One? AI AY Digraphs Worksheet gives first graders focused practice deciding which team belongs in a word. Both spellings say the same long a sound, so the choice is not made by ear at all — it is made by position. Students learn to look at where the blank falls: ai sits inside a word, as in rain, snail, and brain, while ay finishes a word, as in play, hay, and away. That single rule is one of the highest-value phonics patterns in the first-grade year.
