Common Spelling Patterns Worksheet

A spelling pattern is a chunk of letters that keeps its sound from one word to the next. Once a second grader knows that -ock says the same thing in clock, sock and rock, they stop spelling one letter at a time and start spelling in chunks — which is exactly the move the standards ask for when they say children should generalise the spelling patterns they have learned. This Common Spelling Patterns Worksheet builds that habit with four of the most useful word families a 7-year-old meets: -ock, -ick, -ell and -ing.

Eight words sit in the box at the top of the page, and four labelled cards wait below it. The child reads a word, hears which chunk ends it, and writes it on a line in the matching card. A small picture in every card shows one more word from that family — a rock, a brick, a bell, a swing — so the pattern is anchored to something real before the writing starts, and none of those four pictures gives away a word from the box. This Common Spelling Patterns Worksheet helps children in three ways. First, sorting comes before spelling: deciding which family a word belongs to forces the child to listen to the end of the word instead of guessing at it. Second, writing each word out by hand on a full-size line turns that decision into spelling practice, so the pattern is stored in the hand as well as the ear. Third, the four families are taught side by side rather than one at a time, which is harder and far more useful — real spelling asks a child to choose between patterns, not to apply one on its own.

Keep the four chunks going after the page is finished. Say a word aloud and ask which card it would land on, then add new words to each family together — block, chick, well, king. Write the four patterns on sticky notes and hunt for them in a favourite picture book. Play a quick rhyming game in the car, where each new word has to end in the same chunk as the last one. Ask your child to build a silly sentence that uses one word from every family, and let them read it back to you.
