Description
Learning to spell long a words is a big step in second grade phonics. The long a sound can be spelled more than one way, and readers who know those patterns can decode and spell hundreds of new words with confidence. This Spelling Long A Worksheet gives students focused practice with the two most common long a spellings: a_e, the vowel-consonant-e pattern in words like cake and snake, and ai, the vowel team in words like snail and train. Students say each picture name aloud, listen for the long a sound in the middle of the word, and then write the word themselves.
This long a words worksheet has two parts that build on each other. In Part A, students look at six colorful pictures — a cake, a snail, a whale, a train, a chain, and a snake — and write the matching long a word on the line under each picture. There is no word bank, so students have to hear the sounds and choose the spelling on their own. In Part B, students sort those same six words into two columns by the spelling pattern that makes the long a sound.
