Comparing two versions of the same story teaches young readers to notice how authors make different choices with the same characters and plot. This Compare Contrast Little Red Hen Worksheet gives 2nd grade students two short, original versions of the classic folk tale to read side by side. In both stories the hen asks her friends for help and ends up doing the work herself, but the food she makes and the way each story ends are not the same. Spotting those likenesses and differences is exactly the skill readers use when they compare stories, books, and characters in later grades.
This 2nd grade compare and contrast worksheet is ready to print with no preparation. The first page holds a colorful picture of the farm and both versions of the story, each in its own box so students can look back and forth easily. On the second page, students read six sentences and write each sentence number in the correct part of a Venn diagram: Story 1, Story 2, or Both. Then they write a short answer telling how the hen acts at the end of Story 2 and how that is different from Story 1. Use it in a reading group, as independent practice, or as homework after reading the tale together. A complete answer key is included.

There are three reasons this resource helps children learn to compare and contrast. First, both stories are short and written at a 2nd grade reading level, so students spend their energy thinking about the stories instead of decoding hard words. Second, the Venn diagram sort gives every sentence exactly one correct place, which makes the thinking clear and easy to check. Third, the written response asks students to explain a difference in their own words, which moves them from sorting ideas to talking about them.

Act out both endings with simple props and talk about which ending feels fair. Have students write a third version with a new food and a new ending.
