Description
This circling contractions worksheet asks students to spot the one correctly spelled contraction in a row of three look-alikes. Third graders usually know what a contraction means long before they know where the apostrophe belongs, and forms like cant’, wo’nt and theyr’e are exactly the errors that show up in their own writing. Choosing between them slows students down at the moment the apostrophe is decided.
Part A of this circling contractions worksheet prints three spellings above each sentence. Students pick the real contraction and write it in the blank, so the choice is followed by production rather than a circle alone. Part B gives a four word box and four sentences whose underlined contraction has its apostrophe in the wrong place. Students write the correct spelling on the line. A full answer key is included on the second page.

Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- It targets the apostrophe, not the meaning. Every distractor differs only in where the apostrophe sits, so students have to look at the letters it replaces.
- It moves from choosing to writing. Copying the right spelling into a sentence fixes the correct form in a student’s hand, which a circle never does.

Teacher and Parent Ideas
- Before starting, write can not on the board and ask which letter the apostrophe will replace. Then reveal the three spellings in item one.
- Have partners read each choice row out loud. Contractions that sound the same but look different make the apostrophe rule easier to see.
- After Part B, ask students to hunt for contractions in a book they are reading and check every apostrophe.
- Keep the answer key page as a quick reference chart during writing time.
