Description
Counting by fives is the bridge between skip counting and telling time, and this count by fives on a clock worksheet builds that bridge one step at a time. Every number on a clock face stands for five minutes, so a student who can count 5, 10, 15, 20 all the way around the dial can read any analog clock to the nearest five minutes. Second graders are expected to tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, and skip counting is the fastest, most reliable way to get there. This activity makes that pattern visible: the child writes the minute count beside each numeral and then uses it to read three real clocks.
This 2nd grade telling time worksheet is a two-part practice page. In Part A, a large clock face is ringed with twelve boxes. The 1 and the 6 are filled in as worked examples, showing 5 minutes and 30 minutes, and the student counts by fives around the dial to complete the other ten boxes. In Part B, three labeled clocks show when recess, lunch, and story time begin. The student finds the hour the short hand has passed, counts by fives to the long hand, and writes the time on the line below each clock.
