Description
Learning to read a clock face is one of the most useful math skills a young student picks up, and it takes steady, focused practice. This Show the Time Worksheet gives 2nd graders that practice by asking them to move between the two ways we write time every day: the digital time they see on a phone or microwave, and the analog clock hanging on the classroom wall. Students learn that the minute hand travels all the way around the dial once every hour, landing on a five-minute mark at every numeral, while the hour hand creeps slowly from one number to the next. Recognizing that slow creep is the key insight, because it is what tells a reader whether it is a few minutes after nine or almost ten o’clock.
This 2nd grade clocks worksheet is built around eight clock faces and two different tasks, so students have to think in both directions rather than repeat one motion eight times. In the first section, six cards each print a digital time above a blank clock face, and the student draws the hour hand and the minute hand to show that time. There are three clear reasons this Show the Time Worksheet helps children learn to tell time. First, drawing the hands is harder than reading them, so it exposes the misunderstanding a multiple-choice question hides: a student who thinks the hour hand stays parked on the numeral will draw it in the wrong place and see the mistake immediately.
