About this resource

Description

Elapsed time is the bridge between reading a clock and using one. A child can name the time on a dial long before they can say how far apart two times are, and that second skill is what real life keeps asking for: how long until recess, how long the car ride lasted, how many hours are left before dinner. This how much time passed to the hour worksheet works on exactly that step, keeping every time on the whole hour so the counting stays clean and the thinking stays on the relationship between the two clocks rather than on five-minute intervals.

This 2nd grade clocks worksheet gives students four pairs of analog clocks. Each pair shows a start time and an end time, and the student writes how many hours passed between them. Because both dials are drawn rather than written digitally, students have to read each clock first and then compare, which is a genuinely different move from reading one clock alone. Two short word problems follow, so the skill leaves the dial and lands in a story. Use it as morning work, as a quick check after a telling-time lesson, or as review before a unit test.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • 4 two-clock elapsed time problems and 2 word problems

There are three reasons this resource helps children learn the skill. First, it separates reading a clock from comparing two clocks, so a student who already tells time confidently still has something real to work on. Second, every time sits on the hour, which removes the minute-counting load and lets the child concentrate on the jump from one hour to the next. Third, the word problems ask the question in both directions, once for the ending time and once for the number of hours, so children cannot solve the page by repeating a single move. Working through this how much time passed to the hour worksheet builds the habit of asking what changed between two moments, which is the heart of elapsed time.

Teachers and parents can extend the skill away from the page. Set a kitchen timer and have children predict what the clock will read when it rings. Keep a simple daily schedule on the board and ask how long each block lasts. Play a quick game where one child sets a demonstration clock to a start time and a partner sets the end time a named number of hours later. Reading a chapter book together is another natural fit: note the time you begin and the time you stop, then count the hours as a group.
