Description
Final consonant blends are one of the last decoding hurdles first graders clear before they read independently, and the letters l and d at the end of a word are a perfect place to practice. In words like told, gold, held and field, both sounds have to be heard and said together, quickly, without a vowel slipping in between them. This LD Phonics Stories Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives children a short, gentle story packed with -ld words so they meet the pattern in real reading rather than on a drill sheet, and then asks them to show they understood what they read.
Donald and Gerald are old pals who walk out to a big field of gold marigolds, fill a wide pail, and sell the flowers at a stand. The story runs to ninety-three words at a first grade reading level and carries more than twenty -ld words, so a child sounding out the pattern gets plenty of practice in one sitting. Read the story aloud together first, then let the child read it alone and answer the five multiple-choice questions on page two.
