About this resource

Description

Cause and effect is the first piece of real reasoning a young reader does with a text: something happens, and because it happened, something else follows. Second graders meet that idea everywhere, but it lands fastest when the causes come from their own day. This Eating Healthy Cause and Effect Graphic Organizer Worksheet builds the skill out of food, drink, and the way a body feels afterward — oatmeal before school, milk with lunch, a crunchy apple, a water bottle left in a backpack. Every pair on the page is one a child can test against yesterday, which is exactly what makes the connection stick.

The sheet has two parts that ask for the skill in two different ways. Part A prints four causes in colored pills on the left and four effects on the right, printed out of order, so a student has to read every choice before drawing a single line. Part B moves from recognizing to producing: two new causes are given, and the student writes one complete sentence telling the effect that followed. Use it as morning work during a health unit, as a reading warm-up, or as a quick check after a read-aloud. The matching half keeps developing readers moving while the writing half gives confident readers room to explain themselves.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • 4 cause-and-effect matching pairs and 2 write-the-effect sentence prompts

Three things make this 2nd grade cause and effect worksheet worth more than a quick review. First, the effects are printed in a scrambled order, so position never gives the answer away and the student has to read for meaning. Second, each of the four links is a different one — breakfast and energy, milk and strong bones, crunchy fruit and clean teeth, missing water and feeling tired — so nobody can guess by pattern. Third, Part B asks for a full sentence rather than a word, which is where a child discovers whether they can say the relationship out loud or only recognize it on a page.

Teachers and parents can carry the same four pairs well past the paper. Ask students to add one more cause from their own lunchbox and trade it with a partner to solve. Keep a class chart for a week: one healthy choice on the left, what the class noticed on the right. Turn the matching pairs into because sentences said aloud — “My bones grow strong because I drink milk” — so the vocabulary moves into speech. For a science tie-in, look at a food label together and talk about which part of the body each nutrient helps, then write a new cause-and-effect pair from what you find. Printed and ready to hand out, the Eating Healthy Cause and Effect Graphic Organizer Worksheet needs nothing but a pencil.
