About this resource
Description
Learning to spot and fix mistakes in a sentence is one of the first big steps toward becoming a confident writer. This Fixing Sentences Worksheet gives second graders focused practice correcting two of the most common errors young writers make: missing capital letters and missing end marks. Each sentence is written without capitalization or punctuation, so students have to read carefully, decide what belongs where, and rewrite the whole sentence correctly.
As a 2nd grade capitalization worksheet, this printable presents eight simple, kid-friendly sentences that each need a capital letter at the beginning, capital letters for names and other proper nouns, and the correct end mark — a period, question mark, or exclamation point. Students read the sentence, then rewrite it on the line below with every correction in place. Use it for morning work, guided practice, a literacy center, or homework, and the included answer key makes checking fast and easy.
What’s Included
- 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
- Answer key
- 8 sentence-editing practice items
This Fixing Sentences Worksheet helps kids learn in three important ways. First, rewriting each sentence in full builds the habit of starting with a capital letter and ending with the right punctuation. Second, mixing statements, questions, and exclamations teaches students to match the end mark to the meaning of the sentence. Third, including names, days, months, and the word I gives real practice capitalizing proper nouns, not just the first word of a sentence.
Teachers and parents can extend this skill in playful ways. Write a silly sentence with no capitals or punctuation on a whiteboard and let kids race to fix it. Have children hunt for capital letters and end marks in a favorite picture book. Or ask your child to write three sentences about their day — one telling, one asking, and one exclaiming — and then check each other’s work. The more students edit real sentences, the more automatic correct capitalization and punctuation become.
