From our teachers' playbook

Big letters for big jobs

What do kids learn about capitalization?

Capitalization starts in kindergarten with two big rules: capitalize the first word of a sentence and the word I. In 1st and 2nd grade kids add names of people, days, months, holidays and places: On Monday, Ana went to Florida. By 3rd through 5th grade they capitalize titles of books, important words in titles, and the first word in a quotation. Older students also learn what NOT to capitalize, like seasons and words such as "mom" when it's not a name. The click moment is when kids understand that a capital letter means "this is the special, specific one."

Our favorite ways to teach capitalization

Capital letters are easy to learn and easy to forget. These moves make them a habit.

Rewrite it right

Write a sentence in all lowercase and rewrite it together, stopping at each word to ask "Is this a specific name?" Kids then rewrite one on their own. Saying the reason out loud builds the habit faster than memorizing a list.

Why it works: handing over the work step by step, from teacher to student, is one of the most widely used teaching frameworks (Pearson and Gallagher, 1983).

Capitalize it challenge

Give kids word cards that are a mix of common and proper nouns, like "city" and "Chicago." They sort them, then capitalize the proper ones. Pairs like "dog" and "Rover" make the difference crystal clear.

Why it works: going from real objects to pictures to symbols is a core recommendation of the U.S. Department of Education's elementary math guide.

Error hunt

Hand out a paragraph with capital mistakes mixed in, some missing and some extra. Tell kids exactly how many there are. Knowing the number keeps them hunting until they find them all.

Why it works: mixing different kinds of problems in one practice set helped students do far better on a later test (Rohrer and Taylor, 2007).

Questions parents and teachers ask us

What are the basic capitalization rules for kids?

Capitalize the first word of a sentence, the word "I," and names of specific people, places, days, months and holidays. Older kids also capitalize titles and the first word of a quotation.

Do you capitalize seasons?

No. Seasons like spring, summer, fall and winter are not capitalized unless they start a sentence or are part of a name, like "Winter Carnival."

When is "mom" capitalized?

Capitalize Mom when it's used as a name, like "Thanks, Mom!" Don't capitalize it after a word like my or her, as in "my mom made dinner."

What grade do kids learn capitalization?

Kindergarteners learn to capitalize the first word of a sentence and the word I. Names, dates and holidays come in 1st and 2nd grade, and titles and quotations come in 3rd through 5th grade.
