Description
The Find the Capitalization Errors Worksheet puts a second grader in the editor’s chair. Every sentence on the page is printed entirely in small letters, and the student has to work out which words the writer got wrong. That is a harder job than filling a capital into a blank, because nothing on the page points at the answer: the child has to know the rule, scan the whole line, and decide word by word.
Part A gives five sentences to read and mark. The student draws a ring around every word that needs a capital letter, and the twelve answers cover the six rules a second grader is expected to hold: the first word of a sentence, a person’s name, a day of the week, a month, a place, and the pronoun I. Because the names sit in different spots from one line to the next, and never at the front twice in a row, the page cannot be finished by pattern. Part B then moves from finding to fixing: four single words, one for each kind of proper noun, are written again on a line with the capital in place. The answer key on page two rings the same twelve words and shows all four rewritten words.

- Before starting this 2nd grade capitalization worksheet, ask the class to name every kind of word that gets a capital and write the list on the board, then leave it up while they work
- Have the student say the rule out loud for each word they ring, so the answer comes with a reason attached
- Ask them to copy one sentence into a notebook the correct way, capitals and all
- Hand back a piece of the child’s own writing and ask them to hunt for the same six rules in it
