Description
Capital letters tell a reader where a sentence begins and which words name a particular person, place, day, month or holiday. Second graders who have just learned to write in full sentences often drop those capitals, and the fastest way to fix that habit is to hunt for the missing ones in someone else’s writing. This editing capitalization worksheet gives students eight short, friendly sentences with the capital letters quietly removed, so every line becomes a small puzzle to solve. Students slow down, read each word, and decide for themselves which ones deserve a capital letter and why.
The page is built in two parts so the skill grows as students work down it. In Part A, students read five sentences and draw a line under the two words in each one that need a capital letter. In Part B, they rewrite three more sentences on solid handwriting lines, putting every capital letter back where it belongs, including the one that starts the sentence and the pronoun I. Use this 2nd grade capitalization worksheet as morning work, as a quick check after a proofreading lesson, or as homework that a parent can score in a minute with the included answer key.

Three things make this editing capitalization worksheet work. First, it teaches by editing rather than by copying, and spotting a mistake in print is what students are actually asked to do on a writing test. Second, the sentences cover the whole second grade rule set at once — names, days of the week, months, holidays and place names — so students practise choosing between rules instead of applying one rule over and over. Third, the rewriting section turns recognition into production: a student who can underline a missing capital does not always remember to write one, and Part B closes that gap.
Teachers and parents can stretch the skill well past the page. Hand students a page from an old magazine and let them circle every capital letter they can find, then sort the words into people, places, days, months and holidays. Write a sentence on a whiteboard in all lowercase and race to see who can fix it first. Ask students to write a short note about a real weekend, then trade papers and edit a partner’s capitals. Keep a class chart of proper nouns that come up during the day and add to it whenever someone spots a new one.
