About this resource

Description

Elapsed time is the amount of time that passes between a start time and an end time, and it is one of the first places third graders use a clock to reason instead of just to read. This half hour elapsed time worksheet keeps every start, every interval and every end on the hour or the half hour, so students can count forward in clean half-hour jumps while they build the habit of watching both hands. Working to the half hour first gives children a dependable pattern to lean on before they move to quarter hours and single minutes, and it makes the jump from one hour to the next feel ordinary instead of tricky.

This 3rd grade elapsed time worksheet runs the skill in both directions on one page. In the first section, students read a start time from a coded analog clock, add the interval printed above it, and write the end time in the box. In the second section, they read two short stories in which the times are printed as digits and run from the morning into the afternoon, then write how much time has passed on the line under each question. Use it as guided practice after a lesson on reading a clock face, as morning work, as a math-center task, or as a quick check before a unit test. A complete answer key is included on the last page, so grading takes a moment and students can check their own work.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • 4 analog clock problems set to the hour and the half hour
  • 2 elapsed-time word problems that cross from morning into afternoon
  • 1 complete answer key

Three reasons this resource helps children learn elapsed time. First, every clock is drawn to the real specification, with the hour hand creeping halfway between the numerals at the half hour, so students learn to read a true clock face rather than a simplified drawing. Second, the page asks for the end time in one section and the elapsed time in the other, which stops children from memorizing one procedure and shows them that the start, the interval and the end are three parts of the same relationship. Third, the word problems run across noon, something a twelve-hour dial cannot show, so children have to think about morning and afternoon rather than only about the numbers.

Once the half hour elapsed time worksheet is finished, teachers and parents can stretch the practice in simple ways. Hang a demonstration clock where children can move the hands, and ask them to show the start time and then jump forward in half hours while counting aloud. Turn the daily schedule into a problem set by asking how long lunch, recess or read-aloud lasted. Play a quick partner game in which one child sets a time and names an interval and the other writes the end time. Keeping a blank clock face on the fridge or the whiteboard turns every wait for an activity into one more chance to practice.
