Description
The letter g is a tricky letter because it makes two different sounds. In words like goat, gate, and guitar it makes a hard /g/ sound, and in words like gem, giraffe, and cage it makes a soft /j/ sound. This Hard Soft G Worksheet – Pictures helps second graders hear the difference and match each picture to the sound the letter g is making. Knowing the hard and soft g rule is an important step in decoding longer words, and it gives students a reliable strategy they can use every time they meet an unfamiliar word with a g in it.
This 2nd grade hard and soft g worksheet is a no-prep, print-and-teach page. In Part A, students look at six full-color picture cards — goat, giraffe, gem, guitar, cage, and gate — say each picture name out loud, and fill in the bubble for hard g or soft g. In Part B, they stretch the skill by writing a word of their own for each sound. Use it as a whole-group warm-up, a small-group phonics station, morning work, homework, or a quick check before you move on to soft c.
